The City of Birds

The City of Birds Maastricht, The Netherlands. 2020-2021

Combining interpretations of existing architectural types and tools - from pigeon lofts, bat towers, aviaries, parrot perches, bird feeders, and traps - with proposals for new mediative objects and spaces, the collection of models looks at the complex, contradictory relation we entertain with other animals, and at the importance of contextual, sentimental, aesthetic scales to accompany any quantitative understandings of our relations with the environment. Through it, the goal is to express a gradient of relation between bodies and species: while the cage expands from the tender to the coercive, the ironic to the dramatic, the metaphorical to the caloric, we see habits transforming into habitats, actions into rituals, earthly practices ascending to metaphors and forms of communication, of which the “cage” is the physical vocabulary.
